Prompt: Reconnecting with Passions and Values

Sometimes, we may find ourselves drifting away from our passions and values. This can happen after significant life changes that make us question our identity, or during stressful times when we lose focus on what once brought us joy beyond work or school. It can also simply happen as time passes; sometimes we don’t have (or make) space to give these parts of ourselves attention.

These passions or values don’t all have to be lofty or life-changing. I invite you to consider these journal prompts to rediscover and connect with what truly excites and inspires you.

What did you love as a child, and why? Did you stop loving it?

I loved bubbles as a kid. As it turns out, I love them even more now. I think they’re pure magic (and I refuse to ruin that by looking up the science of how they work). Even better: as an adult, I can go buy a bubble wand (or machine, or whatever awesome thing they come up with next) whenever I want.
Did you use to love reading fiction? Colouring? Playing football? How could you bring these activities into your life now?

Who do you admire, and why?

My great aunt had the most incredible sense of style. When I go to a thrift store and see a piece I love, she’s who I think of. Maybe it’s the pure aesthetic joy of being inspired by her taste; maybe it’s the idea of embodying the independence and individuality she radiated. Whatever it is, when a family member tells me I look like her, I feel proud.

What do you admire in others? Is it a friend’s cooking skills? An activist’s unwavering commitment to a cause you care about? How might you emulate or enjoy that in your own life?

What makes you lose track of time?

I love painting. And, the idea of starting a painting on a blank canvas sometimes feels overwhelming after a week of work. But what I’ve realised is: I love to paint. It doesn’t always have to be ‘a piece’. I love to help repaint my sister’s bathroom, I love to complete a cheap paint by numbers kit from the craft store.

What (healthy, sustainable) activities make the world around you fade away? Is it playing with your pet, or staring at the stars, or playing the ukulele? How can you invite that state of being into your life more often?
